OUR HISTORY - The Muskegon County World War II Veteran Project began in 2009 with a visit to the home of a local veteran. A photo was taken of his original picture in uniform and his basic data was recorded in order to make a caption. This was the beginning of a personal collection of one man. He continued making such visits of people he already knew. When about two hundred such photos had been printed, the volunteer was interviewed by Senior Perspectives and the word of the project spread into the Greater Muskegon community. Three museums in turn contacted him and asked for the photos which he was glad to donate. A system of scanning of the photos and transfer between the museums was set up and it continues today with about five hundred tribute photos being produced a year. The volunteer has spoken to numerous local groups and has appeared several times on local television. The project has been featured in most local newspapers and has appeared in the bulletins of many local churches. It continues to be a free service for the veterans, living and deceased and their families as a way of thanking the local men and women who served their country. The project has remained and will always remain the Muskegon County World War II Veteran Project for men and women who at some time lived in the county.
